Forest Certification

We believe that the boreal forest can and should be managed to both protect its environmental health and provide natural resources that people need. Our goal is to maintain sustainable forest ecosystems over the long term by incorporating a complex balance of biophysical, social, and economic factors into our practices, and measuring our success using internationally recognized criteria.

Forestry certification is voluntary process that serves as a means of protecting forests by promoting responsible forestry practices and provides independent third-party assurance that a forestry operation meets standards set by a specific certification program.

Tolko Industries Ltd. selected ISO 14001 as its standard for management practices because it is best suited to the company. ISO 14001 is a voluntary, international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization. It includes a framework and tools to develop a systematic approach to implementing the company’s environmental core policy, and will help Tolko more effectively manage the environmental impacts of its operations.

Our Woodlands is certified to the ISO 14001 Standard. This certification is important because it demonstrates – via independent audit and through public consultation – that forests under license to Tolko are well managed. The rigorous processes involved in achieving certification also help us to continually improve our environmental performance.

ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System)

Today’s public wants to know that the products they are buying are not leading towards degradation of the environment. ISO 14001 is an International Standard designed to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution. Certification is achieved by the development of an Environmental Management System, and then an audit of this system by a third party.

In 2007 the High Prairie and Slave Lake Division’s Defined Forest Areas were joined into one. The new Northwest Regional Woodland DFA, which includes FMA 0600043, FMA 0200039 and FMA 9700033.

The new public advisory group, that helped develop the SFMP, was formed from the two existing groups.
