The Public Advisory Group

With the creation of the new extended DFA came the need for a new Public Advisory Group. The new PAG formed in February of 2007 needed to not only represent the various stakeholders across the DFA but also the large geographic area. The task of the development of a new SFMP for the enlarged DFA was presented to the combined public groups from High Prairie and Slave Lake. Representatives from the 2 groups accepted the challenge and began the task of amalgamating the two SFM plans.

History of the Slave Lake Public Advisory Group:

A local public advisory committee, the Slave Lake Forest Public Advisory Committee (SLFPAC) with representation from the local community was already in existence. It was formed to provide the forest industry based in Slave Lake with an opportunity to consult with an informed public group on various forest management issues. We reviewed with the SLFPAC our intent to seek registration to CSA Z809 in the spring of 2002. Various members from the SLFPAC agreed to become part of the Public Advisory Group (PAG) and take on the task of providing input into the development of local values, goals, indicators and objectives.

During the development of our Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Plan for the Defined Forest Area (DFA), a Public Advisory Group (PAG) was established with the purpose of assisting Tolko in the identification of local-level forest values, objectives, indicators, and targets while meeting the CSA Z809-02 certification standard.

The PAG consists of a broad range of industrial and non-industrial stakeholders (including First Nations) from within and adjacent to the DFA, many of whom are currently or have previously been participants in other advisory and/or forest management planning processes. Tolko invited various Aboriginal groups from the Slave Lake area to become members of the PAG, or to provide input in an alternative manner of their choosing. Representatives from the communities of Calling Lake and Wabasca joined the PAG and continue to provide ongoing input to the process. In addition to advertising PAG membership, specific people were asked to participate in the PAG to represent an interest group on the DFA.

History of the High Prairie Forest Resource Advisory Committee:

A Public Involvement Process to identify local level forest values, objectives, indicators and targets was initiated in October 2003. From this process, which included discussion within the Forest Resource Advisory Committee (FRAC), information gathered from a website, local radio and newspaper advertisement, as well as open houses in local Aboriginal communities, the Companies were able to address criteria outlined in the CAN/CSA Z809-02 version of the Canadian Standards Association.

If you have any questions regarding the PAG, or if you are interested in participating in the group, please contact Tolko Industries Ltd.
